Student Chapter Updates Summer 2023

AAAR at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign by Manho Park

Last spring semester, we continued our activities like monthly journal club, and had chances to reach out to community!

We participated in the Engineering Open House (March 31-April 1) with our exhibit “Care for the Air.” We demonstrated many aerosol sciences and engineering including “smog in a jar”, low cost air quality sensor, Corsi-Rosenthal Box, DIY “pollution catcher”, and the details are here in our blog post. We won two awards from this exhibit— “2nd place for Best demonstration of a STEM principle” and “Distinguished Environmental and Sustainability Efforts.”

We had a presentation prep session before the 28th Environmental Engineering and Science Symposium which is organized and hosted by grad students in CEE of UIUC. In our prep session, several of our members had chances to practice their poster/podium presentation and receive feedback. With this endeavour, Manho Park and P S Ganesh Subramanian won awards for their presentation!

We hosted June AAAR AS&T lecture series on June 12. Alejandro Keller, a Research Scientist at the University of Applied Science Northwestern Switzerland gave a zoom talk titled “The Organic Coating Unit, An All-In-One System for Reproducible Generation of Secondary Organic Matter Aerosol.”

On July 8, we participated in Urbana Farmer’s Market Science Outreach with Atmospheric Sciences Department. We showed our data collection during the wildfire smoke day (June 28) using low-cost sensor and explained how the C-R box is effective to improve indoor air quality in wildfire day.

Our EOH exhibit which was received two awards:

AAAR at the University of Florida by Sripriya Nannu Shankar

In Spring 2023, the chapter hosted the “Air Quality Workshop 2023” in a hybrid mode. Participants from the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, University of South Florida, and University of Miami shared their research through platform and poster presentations. All the in-person participants had a tour to the aerosol labs at UF and enjoyed networking at the event.

In Summer 2023, we plan to organize a meet and greet event with current and incoming members of the chapter.
