Student Chapter Updates

Anthropocene Institute

AAAR at Colorado State University (CSU)

Samuel O’Donnell, Chapter President

The CSU AAAR chapter has been actively participating in the department’s weekly atmospheric chemistry meetings. We have hosted a variety of presentations on topics such as monitoring air toxics in Colorado, new particle formation in the Arctic, the impacts of biomass burning on air quality during ASIA-AQ, and modeling the oxidation products of OVOCs.

As we near the end of the semester (still a long way to go!), the AAAR chapter will be providing lunch at one of the meetings — a tradition that is always well received!

AAAR at the University of California, Riverside (UCR)

Erin Bowey, Chapter President

In our recent Winter academic quarter, the AAAR student chapter at UC Riverside was delighted to have Dr. Sonia Keidenweis–an AGU Fellow, AAAS Fellow, and former AAAR president–visit and present a special seminar on ice nucleation particles (INPs). This opportunity to learn about analytical developments and new findings in a fascinating yet largely unknown area of aerosol research was greatly appreciated. We also always enjoy getting to spend time visiting with presenting aerosol researchers to discuss topical issues in the field, and Dr. Kreidenweis was incredibly knowledgeable and insightful during this session with our chapter. It was an honor to speak with her!

As the UCR chapter looks into the Spring quarter, we’re excited for our plans for upcoming events, science communication and collaborations, our research, and much more.

AAAR at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)

Oladayo Oladeji, Chapter President

We hosted the AAAR CMU Welcome Events to introduce new members to our chapter and foster engagement. We have been holding and will continue to host coffee hours to encourage networking and collaboration among our members, and we plan to host an end-of-the-semester event to wrap up the academic year and celebrate our chapter’s achievements.

Additionally, we are excited to announce the 13th Annual Donora Memorial Lecture, scheduled for May 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Bosch Conference Room at Carnegie Mellon University. This lecture series honors the Donora air pollution episode of 1948, which affected the western Pennsylvania community. This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Jasper Kok from UCLA. The lecture will be open to the public.

AAAR at the University of Maryland (UMD)

Nahin Ferdousi-Rokib, Esther Olonimoyo, Martin Ahn, and Steph Jacoby

The AAAR Student Chapter at UMD will have several of our members present their research at conferences including NOBCCHE and EGU Annual Meeting. We have also continued to grow membership, adding new undergraduate members who are eager to learn more about the aerosol science space. Additionally, we have transitioned to a new leadership board, who will continue to brainstorm new events for the upcoming summer and 2025-2026 academic year.
